Democrats just adopted the most progressive platform in party history. 5 things you should know.
It’s a proud day to be a Democrat.
The Democratic national convention kicked off today in Philadelphia, and already it’s been a historic event. The party just voted for the most progressive platform ever, sending a powerful message about the values Democrats share—and the progress they’ll fight to achieve.
The platform includes:
1. An unprecedented commitment to equal rights for LGBT Americans
The new party platform is the first in history to include transgender Americans. It’s also the most progressive platform ever for LGBT rights—endorsing federal protections against discrimination for the first time and pledging to address the crisis of violence against transgender Americans.
LGBT kids continue to be bullied at school, restaurants can refuse to serve transgender people, and same-sex couples are at risk of being evicted from their homes. That is unacceptable and must change.
2. The strongest pledge ever to fight climate change
The 2016 platform goes further than ever in its commitment to combat climate change, including ambitious goals like generating 50 percent of our electricity from clean energy sources within a decade.
We will not only meet the goals we set in Paris, we will seek to exceed them and push other countries to do the same.
3. A bold new commitment to debt-free college
Along with new investments in K-12 education, Democrats are pledging to make debt-free college available to every American and to provide relief to those struggling with student-loan debt.
Democrats are unified in their strong belief that every student should be able to go to college debt-free, and working families should not have to pay any tuition to go to public colleges and universities.
4. A first-of-its-kind pledge to fight institutional racism and end mass incarceration
For the first time ever, the Democratic platform calls for ending mass incarceration, shutting down the school-to-prison pipeline, and taking on the challenges of systemic racism.
Democrats will promote racial justice through fair, just, and equitable governing of all public-serving institutions and in the formation of public policy. ... We will push for a societal transformation to make it clear that black lives matter and that there is no place for racism in our country.
5. Ambitious policies to help working families get ahead
This year’s platform not only includes the most ambitious jobs plan on record, it addresses the challenges working families face in the 21st century—calling for raising and indexing the federal minimum wage and the elimination of “tipped” wages, equal pay for women, national paid family and medical leave, and investments in affordable child care.
We believe in helping Americans balance work and family without fear of punishment or penalty. We believe in at last guaranteeing equal pay for women. And as the party that created Social Security, we believe in protecting every American’s right to retire with dignity.
